Law and Order SVU actor charged with Child Porn: Let the irony commentary begin

WAYNE, N.J. -- An actor who once played a lieutenant on NBC's "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" has been charged with possession of child pornography, authorities said Tuesday.

Albert Insinnia, 57, of Bloomfield, turned himself into the Passaic County Sheriff's Department in Wayne on Monday and was released on bail Tuesday morning, said sheriff's spokesman Bill Maer.

Insinnia was charged with two counts of possession of child pornography after authorities allegedly discovered 180 images of child porn on the hard drive of the actor's laptop computer.

Reached at his home Tuesday afternoon, Insinnia told The Associated Press he had no comment, but his lawyer, Joseph Portelli, said he planned to plead not guilty at an arraignment Tuesday afternoon.

"Any images that may have been on that computer are not his," Portelli said, adding that there are no allegations that his client purchased or sold any of the images.

Ok, so he was only in two episodes, but it still makes good press. And it's really great this guy is paying his lawyer so much to say that the images are not his. My work is done! DONK DONK!!

Snapping Turtle proves too much for Fishermen

Police responded to a call that a firearm had been discharged shortly after 11 p.m. Friday on the Tuscarawas riverbank near the intersection of Earl Road and Lake Avenue.

“From what I understand, two guys where out fishing on Friday night ... just on the western side of the river,” DiLoreto said. “But instead of catching a fish, they caught a snapping turtle.

“So these two knuckleheads have this turtle hooked and I think they were planning to eat it,” DiLoreto continued. “Apparently he was taking a shot at the turtle and his foot got in the way. He shot himself in the foot.”

The discharged weapon was a 9mm handgun.

“I don’t know how bad his foot is, but I do know they took him to a hospital by private vehicle right away. ... At that close range and the bullet moving that fast, it had to have hurt like heck.”

DiLoreto said he is not sure if the turtle lived or not. “I can’t say with a 100 percent certainty – but I think the turtle got away,” he said.

The case is listed as a possible fourth-degree misdemeanor, which could mean up to 30 days in jail and a $250 fine.

So is this then a tale of the Tortoise and the Hair (Trigger)? One thing is for sure--these guys need to have a shell put on themselves so that they don't hurt themselves any more than they already have. I sincerely doubt the guys will get a fourth-degree misdemeanor, the jury won't be able to stop laughing to pose such a sentence, ya think?

Fast Food Robber taken into custody

Chicago police arrested a man suspected of robbing a pair of fast food restaurants.

Police say he climbed half way into the drive-through window at a Burger King on East 95th Street and threatened the workers with a gun. The employees ran into an office for safety and called police. A few minutes after he ran away, a pair of officers caught up with the man.

There was a vehicle matching the description given. We curbed the vehicle at which time we apprehended the offender with a semiautomatic and another handgun and the proceed that were taken from the robbery," said James Dillon, Chicago Police Department.

Police suspect he also robbed a nearby Wendy's.

Police say he was wearing a bullet proof vest and claimed to be a security guard.

Charges are pending.

Tampa man arrested for buthering alligator---on front lawn

(CBS4) TAMPA A Tampa man arrested for butchering an alligator on his front lawn said he only wanted a new belt.

35-year old Benjamin Hodges told police he found the 4 to 5 foot long dead alligator floating in the Hillsborough River on Sunday and took it home in a shopping cart. He had just started to skin it when the police showed up and arrested him.

Hodges was charged with killing or possessing an alligator, both of which are illegal in Florida. It's a felony punishable by up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine. He has been released on $2 thousand bond.

The American alligator is protected in Florida as a species of special concern, and hunting is tightly controlled. Only state-licensed trappers can kill alligators out of season.

NEWPORT NEWS - A Fort Eustis drill sergeantwill spend six months in prison for having inappropriate personal relationships with three trainees in his command.

Staff Sgt. Edmundo Estrada was court-martialed Monday for his actions during a 15-month period at thepost, where he oversaw low-ranking soldiers, many just out of boot camp.

Estrada, a drill sergeant with the 1-222ndAviation Regiment, 8th Transportation Brigade since 2005, pleadedguilty to violating regulations not to develop relationships withsubordinates and three counts of mistreating the three male soldiers.

Estrada said in court he hadone-on-one interactions with each soldier. He asked each one to posefor what he called body-building photos, urging them to take theirshirts off and wear spandex shorts.

He also pressured the soldiers to act out torture scenes from a movie.

One of his victims who testified Monday, aprivate first class now stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, approachedEstrada for help after he was caught cheating on an exam.

Estrada testified he told the private hewould help if the soldier re-created torture scenes from an unnamedmovie. He threatened to stop helping and move the soldier out of thebarracks unless he posed for the pictures, according to testimony.

Estrada, a married father of two, couldhave faced nine years in prison. He pleaded guilty to two of the threecharges, a total of six counts, in exchange for the six-month sentence,reduction in rank to specialist and a bad conduct discharge.

Man cuts off penis in busy London restaurant--was the food that bad?

A MAN cut off his own penis with a large knife in front of diners at a busy London restaurant.

Witness Stuart McMahon, who was eating at Zizzi in the Strand with his girlfriend on Sunday, told the Sun: "This guy came running in then charged into the kitchen, got a massive knife and started waving it about.

"Everyone was screaming and running out as he jumped on a table, dropped his trousers and popped his penis out.

"Then he cut it off. I couldn't believe it."

Police said a man in his 30s was taken to a south London hospital where his condition was stable today.

11-year old girl stops sick mom's van

PERU, Indiana (AP) -- An 11-year-old girl stopped a van that went out of control when her diabetic mother became ill, police said.

Indiana State Police Senior Trooper Joe Swisher said Abigail Parker's actions were "nothing short of heroic."

Besides stopping the van, Abigail kept her mother and 8-year-old brother calm and informed paramedics about her mother's condition, Swisher said.

State police dispatched an ambulance and troopers to U.S. 31 south of Peru on Saturday after the girl called 911 and another person reported a reckless driver.

Officers found the van stopped, partially blocking the southbound lane of the highway. Deborah Parker, 36, of Muncie, who had been driving, was unaware of her surroundings. She was treated for low blood sugar.

Abigail told police her mother had started driving erratically at about 80 mph. The girl said she climbed from the rear seat of the van onto the woman's lap and managed to stop the vehicle before calling 911.

Ok, this is a great story, but come on, she is 11, she's only like a little over 4 years to be driving normally. I think the real story is the minivan going 80 miles an hour. Pretty much every one I've ever seen seems to top out at 55...in the passing lane.

Honor student serving community gets served by drunk man

An 18-year-old man was shot and wounded in the leg when he tried to get his neighbor to sign some documents for verification of volunteer hours as part of his National Honor Society requirements at 10:30 p.m. on April 5.

The younger man reported that while at his 43-year-old neighbor's house, the older man offered to show the younger man his new pistol.

Reports indicate the younger man smelled alcohol on the breath of his neighbor. He said he became worried when the man loaded the pistol.

The older man told police he was trying to remove a round from the chamber of the pistol when he accidentally discharged the firearm into the thigh of his young friend.

After he was shot, the18-year-old called his father and told him, "Dad come over, I've been shot," according to the police report. The older man was given a summons for reckless endangerment and released at the scene.

Giving your boss a Benny Hill slap on the head is a career limiting action? NOPE

A worker fired after giving his boss a Benny-Hill style slap on the head at a works night out to promote team building and bonding has won his unfair sacking claim and almost £2,000 compensation.

Derick Brown, 49, from Dundee, a team leader in the stores department of Tokheim UK, had been forewarned by customer services manager Robert Fraser not to give him a 'hard time' at the event.

A Dundee employment tribunal heard his employers, who supply fuel dispensing equipment, hosted a night out for workers and their partners in November 2005, providing each with a voucher to be exchanged for drinks at the bar and a half bottle of wine per person at the table.

Mr Brown and some workmates were watching a boxing match on TV in the bar. One of the contestants was bald, and the tribunal noted in that respect may have looked similar to Mr Fraser.

The contestant looked like a character from a Benny Hill comedy sketch, during which Benny Hill pats or slaps a bald man on the head.

Mr Brown suggested that he would give Mr Fraser "a Benny Hill" and he was encouraged to do so. He then returned to the table where Mr Fraser was sitting with his wife and patted or slapped him on the head from behind.

Mr Fraser had been unaware of his presence until then and told him he would "see" him on Monday morning.

Mr Brown admitted he was intoxicated and at his disciplinary hearing he said it was a drunken prank, not an assault, but accepted his behaviour was totally unacceptable.

Hot new trend in home building: Dual Master Bedrooms

JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Springtime usually signals 'building time' in the housing world. Despite a decline in the housing market some families are still choosing to build custom homes. And those plans include something new, separate master bedrooms.

A growing number of couples are living together but sleeping separately.

Howard and Bev Rossman have been married for 33 years. They love each other but can't stand sleeping together. Bev has restless legs and Howard snores.

So they bought a home and tore it down to build a custom home. The plans included what they call a "snoring room".

"It takes out the tension of sleeping together, not the romance," says Bev Rossman. "So it eliminates an aspect of conflict."

Bev says in the past she would have to search for another place to sleep when her husband snored. "I would have to go to our son's room or our daughter's room in the middle of the night," says Bev. "In the morning he would wake up and go 'I'm so sorry that you had to move' but now it's great."

The National Association of Home Builders predicts by the year 2015 that 60% of custom homes could have dual master bedrooms.

In fact many couples want separate rooms, separate bathrooms and different closets.

What a Boob! Man caught with stolen bras jailed

PENANG: A 43-year-old labourer, caught while fleeing with two stolen bras partially tucked inside his pants, was jailed three months by a magistrate's court on Tuesday.

Chong Lean Hin, of Air Itam admitted to stealing the bras, worth a total RM10 belonging to two sisters.

He was nabbed by the girls' father Chow Eng Chuah while trying to escape.

Chong, unrepresented, had pleaded guilty on Jan 30 to committing the offence.

He had stolen the bras from Chow's house at Taman Air Itam, Lebuh Air Itam at 1.45am on Jan 28.

According to the facts of the case presented by prosecuting officer Chief Insp Mohd Fadzli Napiah, Chow was outside his house when he saw Chong removing the grey and beige-coloured bras, which were hung over the house fence.

Chong fled when Chow approached him but was nabbed after a chase.

In mitigation, Chong asked for a lenient sentence.

He also identified the bras as those produced in court.

Powerball winner to quit job as sacrifice...ummm..ok...

(Columbia) -- The person who won the $15 million dollar Powerball lottery earlier this month after buying a ticket in Florence has come forward.

79-year-old Navy Veteran Dick Sandlin of Wilmington, North Carolina claimed his check, Tuesday.

The ticket was sold at Amoco Food Shop #3 in Florence.

Sandlin and his wife, Colleen, have decided to take the lump sum, which averages out to $7.1 million dollars before taxes.

"I don't feel any different right now than I did before. I'm still dreaming. I guess I'll wake up after a while and jump up and down and hollar and all that stuff," says Dick.

At this point, Sandlin says all he plans on doing with the money is buying "an RC Cola and a Moon Pie."

As for his job with the North Carolina State Parks, "I feel kind of guilty holding a job that someone else might really need, so I think I might just blow out and let someone else have the job," said Sandlin.

This is the fourth time a winning Powerball ticket has been sold in South Carolina, and all four winners have been from North Carolina.

Lockdown at OU for suspicious object--an umbrella

NORMAN — The Norman campus of the University of Oklahoma briefly experienced a lockdown this morning after officials received a report of an unidentified Caucasian male of student age carrying a “suspicious object.”

According to a campus-wide email issued at 9:32 a.m., university deans, directors and chairs were ordered to “Immediately take action to keep all individuals within their current buildings into further notice.” A second email was sent by President David L. Boren’s office at 9:50 a.m. to students, faculty and staff. The note stated, “students, faculty and staff should stay in their buildings or dorms until further notice.”

More than an hour after Boren made his statement, his office released an update and a correction.

“The person apparently seen by the student making the earlier report has self-identified himself,” Boren said. “He was carrying an umbrella and not a weapon. We appreciate his action in identifying himself. We now consider the matter closed. I appreciate the cooperation from the university community in this matter. We always want to err on the side of caution in a situation like this.”

Man punches out Mayor over unfixed pothole

ORAIOKASTRO, Greece, April 17, 2007 (UPI) -- A man who allegedly assaulted the mayor of the Greek village of Oraiokastro says he did so because of the town's failure to repair a pot hole.

The man, who was not identified, went to the home of Mayor Nikolaos Batos and punched him in the face and body when he answered the door, Ekathimerini reported Tuesday.

The alleged attacker said he was angry that municipal workers would not fill a pothole in front of his home. He was arrested and charged with causing bodily harm, making threats, swearing and disturbing the peace.

The mayor was treated for bruises at a local hospital. Doctors said his injuries were not serious.

Secret Service Accidental Shooting--Cheney immediately says "HAHA-NOT ME!"

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Two Secret Service officers were injured in an accidental shooting Tuesday at the White House.

The incident occurred in a security booth at the southwest gate.

Secret Service spokeswoman Kim Bruce said one officer was injured in the leg and the other received a shrapnel wound in his face. She said the injuries appeared to be non-life threatening and that both officers were taken to nearby George Washington University Hospital.

The gun involved was a service-issued weapon, she said. She said the Secret Service Office of Inspection would conduct a review.

Man charged with stealing 66 colonoscopes from hospitals

A man has been charged with taking 66 colonoscopes from hospitals around the region and then selling them to various medical equipment distributors.

Michael Marburger was charged in federal court in Pittsburgh yesterday by a criminal information with 66 counts of transporting stolen goods across state lines.

According to court documents, Mr. Marburger took the colonoscopes from hospitals in Pittsburgh; Erie; Du Bois, Clearfield County; Altoona, Blair County; Cleveland; Butler; Martins Ferry, Ohio; State College, Centre County; Akron, Ohio; and Clarksburg, W.Va. between March 2004 and July 2006.

The most taken from any one place, according to paperwork, were 10 colonoscopes stolen from United Hospital Center in Clarksburg. They were valued at approximately $210,000 and were taken from July 8 to 28, 2006.

Man accused of dancing naked in backyard...in front of children

(CBS) BRIDGEPORT, Conn. A judge has ordered a series of psychiatric and competency exams for a Fairfield man accused of dancing naked in his backyard in front of two neighborhood children.

Keith Iodice, 39, was out on bond after being arrested Dec. 1, 2005, and accused of downloading child pornography while working at Sikorsky Aircraft in Stratford. U.S. Magistrate Judge William I. Garfinkel will use the test results to determine if Iodice is competent to stand trial.

Iodice had a brain aneurysm when he was 18.

"He has no short-term memory," said his attorney, Frank Riccio Sr. "He does well as long as you plot the whole day out for him."

Iodice was taken into federal custody earlier this month after two boys said he was staring at them and gyrating his hips while naked in his backyard.

Iodice does not face new charges connected with the nude dancing, but he was accused of violating the terms of his release on the child-pornography charges.

Meanwhile, Fairfield First Selectman Kenneth Flatto has asked Police Chief David Peck to look into how the nude dancing accusation was handled. The mother of one of the children involved and several neighborhood parents had said Iodice should have been arrested on charges of public indecency or risk of injury to a minor.

Mutilated Goat carcass found in South Buffalo

The body of a mutilated goat was discovered Wednesday afternoon in a remote area off Hopkins Street in South Buffalo, and city officials suspect animal cruelty.

The carcass, which was found by children playing in the area at about 4 p.m., was headless, and its four legs were sawed off, according to Michael J. DeGeorge, special assistant to Buffalo Police Commissioner H. McCarthy Gipson.

“There’s a feeling it was probably dumped in that location,” DeGeorge said. “Animal control officers believe it was probably there about 24 hours.”

Authorities said it is uncertain whether the animal was killed as part of a religious or cult ritual. The slaughter of a lamb or a goat around Passover or Easter is a tradition practiced by some religions.

DeGeorge said police found three dimes on the carcass but were unsure of the significance.

Gonorrhea now on CDC's "Superbug" list

ATLANTA (AP) U.S. health officials are recommending wider use of a new drug to treat gonorrhea because the sexually transmitted disease is steadily becoming resistant to the longtime standard antibiotic.

Fluoroquinolones, a class of antibiotics that includes Cipro, have been the most common way to treat the bacterial disease since the early 1990s. Since then, gonorrhea has grown increasingly resistant to those drugs.

On Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that a different class of antibiotics, cephalosporins, be used instead.

``Gonorrhea has now joined the list of other superbugs for which treatment options have become dangerously few,'' said Dr. Henry Masur, president of the Infectious Disease Society of America. ``To make a bad problem even worse, we're also seeing a decline in the development of new antibiotics to treat these infections.''

The CDC made the new recommendation after discovering that nearly 7 percent of gonorrhea cases among heterosexual men in a survey of 26 U.S. cities last year had drug-resistant strains of the disease. In 2001, only about 0.6 percent of gonorrhea cases among heterosexual men were drug-resistant.

``That leaves us with a single class of highly effective an disease. In men, it can cause epididymitis, a painful condition of the testicles that can lead to infertility if untreated, the CDC said.

In the survey of 26 cities last year, Philadelphia had the highest percentage of drug-resistant cases with almost 27 percent, followed by areas in California and Hawaii where health officials long have known about gonorrhea drug resistance.

Stenvall learnt to read with the help of the Aku Ankka strips, just like hundreds of thousands of others. And the duck won over the hearts and minds of the baby-boomer generation.
Now they order the comics for their children and their grandchildren.
The circulation of Aku Ankka has grown for seven straight years in succession and hit a new record early this year, at 320,514 copies.
Aku Ankka is Finland's largest magazine, not including some free magazines put out to customers by store chains and the like.

University President arrested for 2 DUI charges--in two days

William J. Frawley, 53, was charged yesterday with drunken driving and refusing a Breathalyzer test in Fredericksburg, city police said. Both are misdemeanors.

UMW Rector Bill Poole said Frawley was in Mary Washington Hospital’s intensive care unit this afternoon.

He said at a news conference that he didn’t know the details of Frawley’s injuries.

“The tragedy of all this is he’s such a brilliant man and so capable,” Poole told The Free Lance–Star.

Fairfax County police spokeswoman Camille Neville said today that there is an outstanding warrant for Frawley in Fairfax on a DUI charge from Tuesday.

The president of the University of Mary Washington also faces a charge of drunken driving in Fairfax County stemming from an accident there Tuesday afternoon, Fairfax police said today.

Mary Washington university officials said Frawley left Inova Fairfax early yesterday morning against advice. He was arrested about 2 p.m. yesterday at Brompton, the official residence of the Mary Washington president.

It’s unclear exactly how Frawley got between Inova Fairfax and Fredericksburg.

Female Civil Servants in India must now disclose menstrual history

FEMALE civil servants in India are furious with new government guidelines that force them to list intimate details, including their menstrual history, in appraisal forms, a newspaper reported today.

The All-India Services Performance Appraisal Rules 2007 – which apply to senior government workers – ask female employees to record their last menstrual period, as well as when they last took maternity leave, the Hindustan Times said.

"The questions are too intrusive and have no bearing on our work," Seema Vyas, a senior bureaucrat in Maharashtra state, was quoted as saying.

India's Ministry of Personnel, which drew up the new appraisal guidelines, says it has not received any complaints and the addition of such questions was based on advice from health officials.

"I assume this will help evaluate the officer's fitness," Satyanand Mishra, the ministry's most senior bureaucrat, told the newspaper.

But women officers said it was "insensitive" and "irrelevant", adding they planned to protest.

"Health problems or aberrations are generally mentioned to assess the officer's physical fitness," said Chandra Iyengar, a senior civil servant.

Man arrested for pimping out sister on Craigslist

A Las Vegas man is under arrest accused of sexually assaulting his mentally challenged sister and attempting to offer her for sex out on the internet. 34-year-old Rodney Nickerson is being held on $800,000 bail.

According to a police report, Nickerson admitted to putting a photo of his 36-year-old sister on craigslist website. The ad featuring his sister apparently asked men if they wanted to have sex with her.

The report states Nickerson also fondled his sister and had another man touch her as well. Nickerson's mother told New's 3 her son has always taken care of his sister since they were little .

"I know my son didn't do what they said he did," Deborah Nickerson told News 3. "My son also stuck up for her, (has) taken care of her. He's never bothered her sexually."

Police say they received a tip about the craigslist ad around mid-March. An undercover officer tried to arrange a meeting with Nickerson twice, but Nickerson never showed up.

Nickerson goes before a judge to answer to these charges at the end of the month.

Woman arrested for being high on Holy Spirit...and a little bit of marijuana

Holy Spirit and a little bit of marijuana — Saturday, about 5:20 a.m., Officer Rocky McDaniel was sent to check on a woman walking in the middle of University Blvd., causing drivers to have to go around her. The woman had “very red bloodshot eyes and very intoxicated on an unknown drug... did not have any normal behavior,” McDaniel wrote in his report. She said she was going to the emergency room to see a friend who had overdosed.

When he asked her if she knew why McDaniel stopped her, she stated “because I was walking in traffic.” Yes, that was correct, and he explained she couldn’t walk in the roadway. Then, he asked her if she was high on some kind of drug. Her answer, the report said, was “I am. It’s the Holy Spirit and little bit of marijuana.” He asked if she had any left and she said, “Not enough to get you high, but I know who to go to for more.” McDaniel asked who and she answered, “Jesus.”

She searched herself and produced a glass pipe with a green leafy substance residue, and she stated, according to the report, that she had “put it in the pipe so I would not lose it for later.”

McDaniel asked if that was all she had on her and she emptied her pockets. The last pocket she searched, the report continues, she pulled two plastic drinking straws and a plastic baggy with a white powder inside. “I guess not. That’s my snort tubes and there is just a little left in the baggy, but not enough to use.” She then handed all the property to McDaniel.

McDaniel said he was going to have to take her to jail. She leaned over and picked up her coat and said, “OK... It’s getting cold out here.”

When given jail breakfast, she made an applesauce sandwich, then took off her sock and wiped her mouth with it, the report continued.

Snellville Georgia New City Ordinance Kicks Gangs to the curb

Snellville has hung out the "No Vacancy" sign for gangbangers.

By passing the street gang terrorism and prevention ordinance Monday night, the City Council also served notice that suspected gang members will find it very difficult to keep a rental roof over their heads within the city limits.

Landlords can streamline evictions in cases where three or more suspected gang members are living together, using a civil court process that can take a few weeks or even days, as opposed to four to six months under the existing criminal court process.

Police Chief Roy Whitehead, who pushed for the ordinance, said Tuesday it is a preventive measure, as opposed to a reaction to an existing widespread problem.

"We want to prevent it [gang-related activity] from coming here," Whitehead said.

Whitehead said his effort to get the ordinance passed was partly as the result of one recent case, where four brothers suspected of being gang members were arrested and then evicted. They are still suspects in an investigation that could involve charges of burglary, robbery, statutory rape and holding a teenage girl against her will for four days, he said. The family has denied the siblings were part of a gang.

Under the new law, the police will work in partnership with landlords who believe they've rented to gang members, he said. Police will go to Magistrate Court along with the landlord and help present evidence to a magistrate, who, if convinced, can issue an eviction notice.

"There's a possibility this could be seen as displacing a crime problem," Whitehead said, acknowledging that evicted gang members might just move to a nearby community with less stringent ordinances. But if enough cities pass similar ordinances, they'll have nowhere to go, he added.

Landlord and Realtor Dave Holley said he supports the measure but doesn't want landlords to be held liable for any illegal activity by tenants.

Whitehead said the group of suspected gang members whose case led him to seek this ordinance had come to Snellville after being evicted from a rented home in another county.

Thief trapped by 95-year old woman

BERLIN: A 95-year-old German woman solved a series of mystery thefts in a retirement home when she set a trap, hid in a toilet, and caught the thief red-handed.

"It was a real case of Miss Marple," said a police spokesman in the eastern town of Saalfeld on Thursday. "It's good to know there are still courageous old ladies out there."

The elderly sleuth left cash out in her room as bait and then withdrew to the toilet to lie in wait. A cleaner then entered and pocketed the money, unaware she was being watched.

"Then the old lady hit the alarm button in the toilet and staff in the home nabbed the cleaner," the spokesman said.

The cleaner, 36, later confessed to police she was responsible for other thefts from the home near the spa resort of Bad Lobenstein.

Harry Potter Vandals caught

Ten youths have been arrested after Harry Potter's train, the Hogwarts Express, was attacked by vandals.

The train - famous for departing from imaginary platform 9 3/4 at London's King's Cross station - had numerous windows smashed by yobs.

The damage is expected to cost around £50,000 to repair, according to train operator West Coast Railways.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: "Ten youths have been arrested after 337 windows were smashed on various trains at the West Coast Railway Company Depot in Carnforth, Lancashire.

"Ten males aged between 12 and 14, from Carnforth and surrounding areas, have all been arrested in connection to the incident.

"They have been released on police bail pending further inquiries to report back to British Transport Police in the first week of May."

Forensic experts spent several days at the depot in Carnforth, Lancashire, after the train was attacked on March 10.

This attack was the second on the Hogwarts Express.

In September 2003, graffiti was sprayed on a carriage as the train was parked near Scarborough, North Yorkshire, costing £3,000 to repair.

empire defied a federal judge, repeatedly calling him a -- quote:
"judge gone wild" and refusing to surrender to U-S marshals in
Panama City.
U-S District Judge Richard Smoak ordered Joe Francis into
custody after settlement negotiations soured in a civil suit
brought by seven women who were underage when they were filmed by
Francis' company on Panama City Beach.
Francis drew the contempt order after lawyers for the women said
Francis shouted obscenities and threatened them during
negotiations.
Francis' attorneys appealed the order that would send him to
jail in an emergency motion. Smoak denied a request by Francis to
stay the order pending the appeal.
Smoak first ordered Francis arrested Saturday if he did not
reach a settlement in the case, but later suspended the order.
He reinstated the order in an emergency hearing Wednesday after
attorneys said Francis had altered the conditions of the offer,
making it unacceptable to their clients.
But Francis said yesterday that he was discontinuing settlement
talks and would take the case to trial.

Fleeing Couple jump into River, man loses pants in process

A Cecil County couple attempting to flee city police yesterday by jumping into the Gwynns Falls in West Baltimore after police observed their stolen car being driven erratically were pulled from the cold stream by police and remain in custody.

The man, identified as Jesse Sandow, 28, of North East, is wanted by Delaware police on drug violations and auto theft, said Officer Christopher Warren, one of the arresting officers.

Sandow was expected to be extradited to Delaware.

About 8:30 a.m., Warren, of the Southwestern District, stopped a white Lincoln Town Car on Hilton Parkway between North Avenue and Edmondson Avenue after observing that the vehicle was being driven erratically.

When the car stopped, the driver and the woman got out and jumped into the Gwynns Falls, Warren said.

Warren said other officers arrived and that within minutes the man was found hiding under a rocky outcropping in the water.

The woman, Sandow's wife, made it to the opposite side of the 10-foot-wide stream and was captured by police who were waiting for her.

"They were both soaking wet, and the man's pants came off in the water," Warren said.

Sandow was taken by a city Fire Department ambulance to University of Maryland Medical Center, where he was treated for a sprained ankle and released into police custody.

MORTON, Illinois (CNN) -- At 8 o'clock on a recent Saturday morning, more than 250 men gathered at New Life Christian Church in Morton, Illinois, for a breakfast of porn and pancakes.

The event, not as titillating as it sounds, is the brainchild of Craig Gross, founder of the online Christian ministry, XXXChurch.com. Gross concocted the idea of "Porn & Pancakes" as a way to get Christians and church officials to talk about pornography addiction.

It's a problem, he said, that is growing, among Christian communities.

Over the smell of maple syrup and sausage, Gross and other guest speakers -- including a former producer of pornography -- talk to the men about how pornography negatively affects their lives, including relationships with their families and with God. The men who come to hear them speak want to make sure they don't develop a problem themselves.

"A lot of people think Christians sure don't struggle with this," Gross said. "The stats don't lie: Christians are consuming pornography. And to me, it's not a surprise."

A nonscientific poll on XXXChurch.com found that 70 percent of Christians admitted to struggling with porn in their daily lives. Church officials are not immune either. According to Gross, some 76 percent of pastors he surveyed said they, too, have a problem. Gross says he's not surprised so many Christians find themselves struggling with addictions to pornography, considering just how mainstream and easily accessible it has become.

Adult entertainment is an enormous business in the United States, taking in an estimated $12 billion annually. Every second, approximately 28,258 Internet users are viewing pornography, according to the Internet Filter Review. With some 4.2 million pornographic Web sites to explore, many Christians find themselves unable to turn away.

Sex Offenders have to live in a van down by the river....and the problem is?

MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- The sparkling blue waters off Miami's Julia Tuttle Causeway look as if they were taken from a postcard. But the causeway's only inhabitants see little paradise in their surroundings.

Five men -- all registered sex offenders convicted of abusing children -- live along the causeway because there is a housing shortage for Miami's least welcome residents.

"I got nowhere I can go!" says sex offender Rene Matamoros, who lives with his dog on the shore where Biscayne Bay meets the causeway.

The Florida Department of Corrections says there are fewer and fewer places in Miami-Dade County where sex offenders can live because the county has some of the strongest restrictions against this kind of criminal in the country.

Florida's solution: house the convicted felons under a bridge that forms one part of the causeway.

The Julia Tuttle Causeway, which links Miami to Miami Beach, offers no running water, no electricity and little protection from nasty weather. It's not an ideal solution, Department of Corrections Officials told CNN, but at least the state knows where the sex offenders are.

Nearly every day a state probation officer makes a predawn visit to the causeway. Those visits are part of the terms of the offenders' probation which mandates that they occupy a residence from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

But what if a sex offender can't find a place to live?

That is increasingly the case, say state officials, after several Florida cities enacted laws that prohibit convicted sexual offenders from living within 2,500 feet of schools, parks and other places where children might gather.

"Because of those restrictions, because there are many places that children congregate, because of 2,500 feet, that's almost half a mile, that's a pretty long way when you are talking about an urban area like Miami, so it isn't surprising that we say we are trying but we don't have a place for these people to live in," Grant said.

For several of the offenders, the causeway is their second experience at homelessness. Some of them lived for months in a lot near downtown Miami until officials learned that the lot bordered a center for sexually abused children.

Trudy Novicki, executive director of Kristi House, said the offender's presence put the center's children at risk. "It was very troublesome to learn that across the street there are people who are sex offenders that could be a danger to our children," she said.

So-called activists disrupted the school board as it voted to balance its budget by closing schools to keep its costs in line with its declining student population. One audience member threw grapes, hitting a board member in the chest and getting arrested.

Detroit is so mired in the past - the way the auto industry works, the way the state legislature doesn’t, the way race relations stymie our progress – that it is possible that some activists still believe that it’s 1968.

But the type of antics that occur at most board meetings accomplish nothing – except to provide entertainment for news-watchers across America.

Agnes Hitchcock, the Grape-Thrower, could have offered the board suggestions on how to continue to serve steak on a hamburger budget. Instead, she became the Grape-Thrower, a national laughingstock

Problem is, she made Detroit a laughingstock as well. And that ought to be a crime.

English Dentist caught peeing in surgical sinks

LONDON (Reuters) - A British dentist was found guilty Thursday of urinating in his surgery sink and using dental tools meant for patients to clean his fingernails and ears.

A medical tribunal said it was satisfied the evidence showed 51-year-old Alan Hutchinson, who "routinely" did not wear gloves or wash his hands, had risked the health of "himself, staff and patients" for more than 28 years.

A dental nurse who worked for Hutchinson for 16 years said she had caught him urinating in the sink more than once.

"He was tucking something into his trousers before zipping them up hastily. I walked over and I was behind him. He moved to the left and I could smell urine," the nurse told the tribunal.

A later hearing will decide if the dentist's unhygienic habits impaired his ability to treat patients, and if so, whether he should banned from practicing.

India to World: Don't blame us for Sanjaya

NEW DELHI Apr 5, 2007 (AP)— So much for the Indian Call Center Theory: Under-talented singer Sanjaya Malakar's unlikely wave of "American Idol" support apparently isn't coming from his father's homeland.

Indians are usually attuned to the successes of their compatriots abroad. But apart from a few brief newspaper articles, at least one short TV news segment and a few blog mentions, the reedy 17-year-old with the unsteady voice is a virtual unknown here.

One reason is that the show is broadcast a day late in India, and on an English-language channel that attracts relatively few viewers inthis country of 1.1 billion.

"He's also an object of ridicule," said Amit Varma, who runs the popular India Uncut blog.

Malakar's success with viewers, who vote by phone or text message for their favorite performers, has come despite withering criticism from the three "Idol" judges on New Corp.'s hit Fox network show. The irascible Simon Cowell has even threatened to quit if the native of Federal Way, Wash., wins the contest.

Malakar survived elimination Wednesday night to make it to the final eight. If he can hold on for a few more weeks, he might see his fame spread here, Varma said.

"Even if the guy's really an American, it will be projected by the media here as an Indian doing well in the world," he said. "They'llmake a big deal about it."

As for the theory that Indian call center operators are phoning invotes for Malakar: Most workers have calls automatically dialed for them by computers. They couldn't even call next door if they wanted to.

I have always been an avid watcher of American Idol, but now it's taking on the train wreck effect, where you are watching it just to feel as awkward as watching Dwight and Michael go at it on The Office. For some reason, I am wanting Sanjaya to continue to make a mockery of the American Idol phenomenon and maybe they'll change the rules so some 11-year old doesn't spend hours and hours pouring in text message votes for a "dreamy" kid who can't sing his way out of a wet paper bag.

Wonkaland for stoners found in Tennessee

Law enforcement officers in Tennessee make the greatest underground discovery since Tutankhamen’s tomb was unearthed in the Valley of the Kings.

Under this ordinary house is a marijuana grow-op unlike any you have ever seen. Within the caves of middle Tennessee, growers constructed a complex of offices, living quarters, restroom facilities, and a climate-controlled forest of over one thousand cannabis plants.

The vegetative and flowering chambers each contained over 500 plants on a hydroponic irrigation system.

Three men were arrested. The mastermind behind the operation was running it from Florida.

If you have to go, a good idea would be to NOT go in the sheriffs department lobby

A 31-year-old Oakfield man was arrested Saturday for urinating in the lobby of the Fond du Lac County Dispatch Center.

The man, who was apparently intoxicated, was waiting in the lobby around 5 p.m. Saturday to be picked up by his father, according to a Fond du Lac Police Department report.

Instead he was booked into the Fond du Lac County Jail on a disorderly conduct charge when his father did not show up.

Man falls 300 feet down steep hillside

Pittsburgh--A man fell 300 feet down a steep hillside on Wednesday in Armstrong County.Officials told Channel 11 the incident happened behind Morris Tire Service on Butler Road in East Franklin Township around 12:20 p.m.Arnold Morris, owner of Morris Tire Service, said the man was a customer.Morris said the man and his wife pulled into the parking lot to pick up a vehicle that was being serviced.The man apparently had some papers that blew out of his hand and chased after them, Morris said.He apparently ran off the end of the parking lot, which has no guard rail, and tumbled down the hillside.The man's wife went running into the tire store and alerted workers. They called 911.The man's name and condition are not known.

Woman falls six floors, saved by pile of crap

BEIJING (Reuters) - A Chinese woman survived a plunge from a sixth-floor balcony thanks to a convenient pile of excrement which broke her fall, local media said.

The accident happened when the woman was hanging out laundry on Monday in Nanjing, capital of the eastern province of Jiangsu, the Kuaibao tabloid said on its Web site (www.kuaibao.net).

"Workers happened to be emptying the building's septic tank, which had not been tended for a long time and had regularly blocked sewage pipes," the newspaper said.

"She probably stretched out too far and fell ... right on to a 20 cm-thick heap of excrement."

The woman suffered only slight injuries, the newspaper said.

In March, a six-year-old girl broke only her left leg when she fell six floors on to a pile of snow in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang.

Workers find 17000 under slot machines

Ok, so we've all had those times when we've reached into our pockets of a jacket and pull out some change, and sometimes even some cold cash. We usually get that giddy feeling and even consider our luck and putting down some money on our local lottery. Bottom line: it's unexpected at best and it makes ya "feel good".

Now, consider that the Sands Casino Hotel in Atlantic City is closed and being cleaned up before demolition. And when this cleaning occurred, they found a little more than cold cash. In fact, they found 17,193.34 under the over 2000 slot machines throughout the casino.

Of course, Uncle Sam has to get his piece of this "find". The Sands have to pay 8% tax on the findings, just like anyone who took home gambling winnings.

Here's to hoping some day I find maybe 1% of that in my jeans. Ahhh well....one can dream, can't they?

Laxative Donuts on the menu in New York School

HOLTSVILLE, N.Y. — Some 8th-graders got an early start on April Fool's Day when they handed out doughnuts laced with laxatives to classmates, but it was no laughing matter when five were ticketed by police.

There were no apparent injuries but ambulances were dispatched Friday to Sequoya Middle School on Long Island as a precaution, a spokeswoman for the Sachem School District said.

Suffolk County Police said 19 students and a teacher ingested some of the doped doughnuts. They were screened by the school nurse, Holtsville Rescue personnel and field physicians from the county health department.

Two 13-year-olds and three 14-year-olds were charged with second-degree tampering with a consumer product. The teens, who were not identified because of their age, were issued appearance tickets for Family Court and released to their parents' custody.

Classes proceeded as usual, but parents were given the option to pick up their children. The district also said it would take "appropriate disciplinary action."

Mexico cracking down on porn in taxis, especially when the travelers are six year olds

TUXTLA GUTIERREZ, Mexico — Three taxi drivers were arrested on charges of showing pornographic DVDs in their cabs in the southern Mexican city of Tapachula.

The men were arrested Friday after receiving a complaint from a woman who said she was traveling in a taxi with her 6-year-old son when the driver put on a pornographic film, Tapachula police spokesman Gerardo Ramirez said.

"I asked the taxi to remove the film and he ignored me. It really bothered me and I asked to get out and went to file a complaint," Edelma Gonzales said.

Ramirez said police were debating whether to fine the drivers for moral turpitude or pass the suspects on to state investigators on charges of child sexual molestation.

Pirated DVDs of pornographic films are sold on the streets across Mexico and are particularly prevalent in Tapachula, a rough border town across from Guatemala.

28 Pedophiles arrested in Florida Sting

ORLANDO, Fla. — Three Walt Disney Co. employees were among 28 men charged with soliciting sex from a minor amid a weeklong sting operation in the Orlando area, authorities said.

The men, ranging in age from college students to their 40s and 50s, had chatted online with people they believed to be boys and girls, ages 13 and 14, Polk County Sheriff's spokeswoman Donna Wood.

She said several agencies worked together to set up the sting at a Polk County home, where the suspects were arrested through Sunday.

Three of the men worked for Walt Disney Co., one as a 21-year-old intern, another as a 55-year-old part-time instructor at Disney's Animal Kingdom, and the third as a 44-year-old electronics technician, according to the sheriff's office.

The other men included laborers, food service workers and salesmen. One man said he was an IBM consultant; another a vice president for a South Florida real estate company, authorities said.

Native Americans won't be included in Terror Report...except for Tanto...

OTTAWA -- References to radical natives in the Canadian army's counterinsurgency manual will not appear in the final version of the document, Defence Minister Gordon O'Connor has announced.

Assembly of First Nations National Chief Phil Fontaine said yesterday the inclusion of natives in the manual could threaten the ability of Canadian natives to travel internationally. The use of "radical Native American organizations" as an example of insurgents in a draft version of the manual has incensed native leaders, who viewed the wording as a threat to their political rights to protest.

On the 11th page, under the heading "Overview of insurgencies and counter-insurgencies," a paragraph is highlighted, which states: "The rise of radical Native American organizations, such as the Mohawk Warrior Society, can be viewed as insurgencies with specific and limited aims. Although they do not seek complete control of the federal government, they do seek particular political concessions in their relationship with national governments and control (either overt or covert) of political affairs at a local/reserve ("First Nation") level, through the threat of, or use of, violence."

There is no other mention of natives in the manual, nor does the manual add further context as to why that paragraph is included.

Five pages later, the manual gives other examples of insurgents, listing Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah and the Tamil Tigers.

Mr. Fontaine issued a statement yesterday describing the mention of radical natives as "shocking."

Mr. Fontaine was surprised how quickly the "radical native language" was brought up and how quickly it was told that they would not be included, although most will point to that the tide turned when the Defense Minister found out that Fontaine's Indian name is "Man who will smack your bitch ass down if you try to screw with him". Kudos to the First Nation for standing up for something some would say was pretty petty--although shame on the terror report for even "going there". What year are we in??

Jesus vs. Satan: The battle of the BEEPs

A battle between good and evil is brewing on Rubber Avenue.

Workers at two neighboring businesses in a small shopping plaza at 195 Rubber Ave. have differing opinions about whether or not people should show support for Jesus. An owner of a shop that puts photos onto DVDs placed a sign in front of a parking lot, which is used by both businesses, that says, "Easter: Beep for Christ."

A tattoo artist next door countered Friday with a sign that says, "Honk twice for..." and shows a caricature of a red devil underneath the text.

And so the battle began.

"Beep! Honk, honk!" Those were the sounds that blared all day from the cars of hundreds of commuters who traveled on Rubber Avenue, one of the busiest streets in the borough. Some beeped twice, while others gave just one toot on their car horns.

Claudette Soden, a devout Christian and owner of Photos Onto DVD, fired the first shot last week when she put up her Easter sign. Phil Young, who works at No Regrets next door to Soden's business, countered on Friday morning with his satanic sign.
Soden says Jesus is her "partner in business," and she wants everyone to know it.

"His sign is not bothering me, but I know it's bothering Jesus," she said. . "And children are going to pass by that sign and say, 'What is that? It looks like a devil.' And what are parents going to say to that?"

Fourth-grader's freedom of speech violated, district rules

SYRACUSE, N.Y. Apr 2, 2007 (AP)— A school district violated a fourth-grader's constitutional rights to free speech and equal protection by refusing to allow her to distribute "personal statement" fliers carrying a religious message, a federal judge has ruled.

According to the family's 2004 lawsuit, Nicole Bloodgood tried three times to get permission for Michaela to pass out the homemade fliers to other students at Nate Perry Elementary School. The flier, about the size of a greeting card, started out: "Hi! My name is Michaela and I would like to tell you about my life and how Jesus Christ gave me a new one."

Bloodgood's requests to school officials said that her daughter, now a sixth-grader, would hand them out only during "non-instructional time," such as on the bus, before school, lunch, recess and after school.

Liverpool officials said at the time there was "a substantial probability" that other parents and students might misunderstand and presume the district endorsed the religious statements in the flier, according to the lawsuit.

How can it be said that this is ok because it is done on "non-instruction" but yet still be surrounded by school activities? Man Shows up to DUI Hearing Drunk

YORK, Pa. -- Police in York County said a man who arrived at court drunk for a drunken-driving hearing has been charged again with driving under the influence. Paul Zeigler, 45, of Glen Rock, appeared at a preliminary hearing at the Shrewsbury district court on March 26 for a DUI charge from December. Police said Zeigler appeared to be intoxicated at the hearing.

After his court appearance, police said, Zeigler failed a portable breath test for alcohol and was taken into custody for a blood test. Officials said the second test revealed that Zeigler's blood-alcohol level was twice the legal driving limit and he was charged with DUI.

NIT Championship Shirts Misspelled

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Ouch! These T-shirts are hardly worthy of the NIT champions.

They say "West Virgina." That's right, no "i" before the "a."

The Mountaineers wore them anyway after their 78-73 victory over Clemson on Thursday night.

WVU sports information director Shelly Poe said the NIT printed the shirts. Calls to tournament officials were not immediately returned Friday.

West Virginia coach John Beilein also could not be reached for comment. He and the team were on their way back to West Virginia after winning their first NIT title in 65 years.

Cincinnati Little League Bans Negative Chatter

In a few weeks, 23,000 kids in the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area will celebrate the 75th anniversary of Knothole baseball by filling the springtime air with the nostalgic sounds of the game we all grew up with:

Hey, battuh-battuh. Please swing if it makes you feel good about yourself!

The Knothole Club of Greater Cincinnati has decided to eliminate "chatter." Unless the chatter is "positive" and directed at your own team. You can't say "We want a pitcher, not an underwear stitcher!" unless, maybe, you grew up in a culture that idolizes underwear stitchers. Standings for the Feelgood Division of the Self Esteem League will be available any time now.

Until then, a moment of silence for the death of an American tradition. Proponents of the new edict say it was a necessary response to increased incidents of taunting. They cite one especially ugly example from June, involving a game in Colerain Township between two teams of 14-year-olds in the A-2 division. One parent received 15 stitches after a player whacked him on the forehead with a metal-spiked baseball shoe.

The incident began with a coach being ejected for arguing a balk call and escalated into a full-scale brawl.

Apparently these days, one kid's "no batt-uh" is another kid's "let's throw down."

"We didn't want Knothole to get a bad name for anything," Knothole president Dave Epplen explained. "If you're saying, 'Swing, batter,' and this poor little kid is swinging at everything, he feels bad and maybe he turns to the catcher and gets mad. Honest to gosh, I didn't have any trouble doing this."

Knothole follows the Rules of Major League Baseball. Rule 4.06(a)(2) states, "No manager, player, substitute, coach, trainer or batboy shall at any time, whether from the bench, the coach's box or on the playing field or elsewhere, use language which will in any manner refer to or reflect upon opposing players, an umpire, or any spectator."

Coaches and players found guilty of "negative" chatter will be warned once, then suspended for a game. Maybe they'll be sentenced to watching "Oprah" for a month, too.

"We're going to follow the rule as it's written," Jim Pecot, umpire coordinator for District 34, said.

Practically speaking, there is reason for the move. Taking their cues from the pros, kids have raised (or lowered) the level of chatter to suit the times. It isn't enough now to tell a pitcher he has a glass arm. You also have to question his heritage or disrespect him after a home run.

Given that some of the umpires working lower-level Knothole games are as young as 12, it can be hard for them to differentiate between good-natured chatter and over-the-top woofing. As Pecot put it: "It goes from 'Hey batter, batter' to telling the pitcher he sucks. It gets out of hand. Sometimes, that can be tough for a 13- or 14-year-old umpire to handle."

Well, OK. Kids can be cruel (always have been); young umps can be, um, callow (always have been); and parents, coaches and anyone else who should know better can release their inner-ogres when it comes to kid sports (always have). Any adult ragging a 10-year-old player or a 12-year-old ump should be sent to his room with no "SportsCenter."

But, c'mon.

There are some truths we hold self-evident. Big stuff, such as life, liberty and all that. And there are other, more vital verities, such as the right to shout mildly denigrating things at the other team's pitcher. Or to tell a batter to swing. Or that a catcher's underwear is showing. Great, all-American stuff.

Only now, that's out. You can't have little taunters screaming "Pitcher has a glass arm!" and not expect Attica to break out.

"Chatter is the foundation of youth baseball," said Nick Lutz, a coach in the Loveland Youth Baseball Organization's D-Rec League of 8- and 9-year-olds. "If my self-esteem had been damaged by Knothole, I'd have killed myself by now. I was probably a .190 hitter. I still had fun yelling 'hey batter-batter.' "

The kids on Lutz's team have varying opinions. Essentially, they come down to "Do we still get a snack after the game?"

Said Ryan Mangan, 9: "It's sort of weird, but it has a point. Some kids don't have the same feelings as you." Will Reverman, 8, allowed that the rule was "dumb." Ryan Lutz said it was "really dumb."

Eight-year-old Michael Staley had a more practical concern: "We can still steal, right?"

When you rob a bank, you may want to avoid using Google to learn how to do it

NORWICH, Conn. Mar 30, 2007 (AP)— A bank robbery suspect was arrested after leaving a trail of cyberclues, including an online search for "how not to rob a bank," police said.

Kevin Fitzpatrick, 32, was arraigned Thursday on charges of robbery and larceny for a Sept. 28, 2005, robbery. He was held on unrelated charges in New York at the time of his arrest.

Police said Fitzpatrick was staying with a woman at the time of the Norwich robbery and spent a great deal of time on her computer. They had met on the Internet and had never met in person when he asked to stay for several days, borrowing her car the day of the robbery and returning with a lot of cash, claiming he won it at the Mohegan Sun casino, police said.

Police allege Fitzpatrick walked into a Liberty Bank branch and handed a teller a note demanding money. A week later, a tip led police to the friend, who said she recognized Fitzpatrick from a surveillance photo posted on a newspaper Web site.

Police said when the friend checked the log of her computer, she noticed a search had been conducted for "Norwich bank robbery."

A police search of the computer revealed numerous searches concerning bank robberies.

"Most times when citizens get involved, relaying honest and accurate information about what they see, it's a benefit to the investigation," police Capt. Timothy Menard said.

Student Newspaper has little news, lots of sex; Strangely gets pulled

HAMPTON, N.H. -- Some parents are protesting the "sex" edition of the student newspaper at Winnacunnet High School. Several said they were especially offended by a photograph of two women kissing under the headline, "Why men love women who love women," a quiz question about anal sex, and an interview with an unnamed custodian who said he had found a vibrator in the girls' shower.

"Those articles offended me personally as a parent," said Venus Merrill, a school board member. "It's not something you want to read with your 10-year-old and it's not something that should be going home."

Principal Randy Zito said the Winnachronicle had crossed the line of responsible reporting and that he had dealt with the problem privately. He also said he had pulled copies of the paper that normally would have been sent to middle schools in the cooperative school district.

The newspaper's faculty adviser defended the editors' decisions and said the February edition of the paper was intended to inform students, not shock people -- although they knew it would stir controversy.

"The kids wrote the articles and came up with the topic," said adviser Carol Downer. "They didn't go out to cause controversy, but the Winnachronicle is also not a P.R. piece for the high school. This is a place for students to express their view and talk about issues that are troubling the student body."

The newspaper is not reviewed in advance of publication by administrators. The school board has not discussed the controversy in a public meeting, but parent Paula Wood, of Seabrook, said she wants it on the agenda for the next one.

Zito told her it would have to be discussed in a closed session because it might involve personnel issues, but Wood said she asked the superintendent to hold a public meeting.

"I don't want to discuss personnel," Wood said. "I want to discuss the paper. "I thought it was a vile, disgusting piece of pornography I wouldn't want to be in front of children, let alone paid for by taxpayers."

Wood said she and her children, two boys, discuss sex openly, "but not in a disgusting manner."

The student paper's editor in chief, Katie McCay, and managing editor, Lisa McManus, said they wanted to educate students, nearly half of whom are already having sexual intercourse, according to a 2005 Youth Risk Behavior Survey at the high school. The true or false quiz was particularly enlightening, they said.

"As we put the pages on the table, the staff said, 'Oh my goodness, that's false? I had no idea,'" McCay said. "This is definitely stuff kids didn't know about."

They also got a lot of feedback about the article on lesbians, she said.

"We thought it was an important topic to address," McCay said. "Being in a high school, it's something I've seen and something other kids have seen in the hallways."

In an editorial, McManus wrote that the students were aware they were dealing with a taboo.

"These stories have been edited and re-edited for content and delivery, keeping in mind that the job here is to inform, not shock," the editorial said. "It's about sex. Deal with it. ...

"It is something parents hope their children remain ignorant about until after marriage. It is something faculty members and administrators hope not to deal with, but something that almost all students have experienced or been exposed to."

10-year olds redefine "Little Rascals" in attacking homeless man

(CNN) -- Egged on by a 17-year-old, two 10-year-old boys joined in the attack of a Florida homeless man, leaving him bruised and bloody, police said.

The incident highlights an upswing in violent crime across the U.S. against the homeless.

In 2006, there were 142 attacks and 20 murders, several involving teenagers seeking a vicious thrill, according to the Washington, D.C.-based National Coalition for the Homeless.

Tuesday's incident, which took place in Daytona Beach, Florida, may make history, said the nonprofit's acting executive director Michael Stoops.

"If we're talking about 10-year-olds, that means we've hit an all-time low," said Stoops. "The youngest person to have ever been arrested for a crime like this is 13."

Daytona Police Sgt. Billy Walden said the teen and two boys were walking in their neighborhood around 9 p.m. when they saw 58-year-old John D'Amico. They began throwing rocks at the homeless man.

The 17-year-old, Jeremy Woods, punched D'Amico who then fell over a concrete wall. As he lay on the ground, one of the 10-year-olds -- whose names are not being released -- used parts of the concrete to bash D'Amico in the head, a police report shows.

The three boys made their first court appearance Wednesday wearing ankle shackles and handcuffs, and white jail jumpsuits too big for the two tiny 10-year-old frames. Judge Peter Marshall assigned them public defenders.

Wow...I guess this is just another example of our society's crumbling when it comes to violence. I am sure someone will blame the music they listen to or the TV they watch or the movies they've seen, but no one will discuss the responsibility of teaching right and wrong from the parental side of things. At least with a maximum sentence they'll be able to skip that awkward "prison puberty" stage.

Man tries to illegally smuggle geckos in his socks

A MELBOURNE man allegedly caught hiding three native geckos in his socks will be charged with wildlife offences.

The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) says the man caught the protected native lizards then hid them in socks while transporting them through central Victoria.

DSE north west region wildlife officer Shaun Burke said the Marble-velvet Gecko, an Eastern Spiny-tailed Gecko and a Three-spot Knob-tailed Gecko are believed to have been taken from the wild in New South Wales and brought into Victoria.

Police from Heathcote, near Bendigo, found the lizards during a search of the man's car and alerted wildlife authorities a week ago.

Mr Burke said the man's home was searched but no other protected wildlife was found.

Mr Burke said some species of geckos were popular pets and could fetch high prices on the black market but removing them from the wild had serious consequences.

"The removal of animals like these can heavily affect the local populations from which they were taken, and potentially transmit diseases into other reptile communities," he said.

Unlawfully taking wildlife can attract fines of up to $24,000 or two years' jail or both under the Wildlife Act 1975.

Unlawfully importing wildlife into Victoria attracts a penalty of up to $10,000.

Teacher arrested for stealing Toilet Paper

OSAKA -- A staff member of an Osaka Prefecture high school has been dismissed for stealing toilet paper from the school, the Osaka Prefectural Board of Education said.

The 44-year-old female staffer was allegedly caught putting toilet paper -- worth 37 yen -- into her bag on Aug. 23 last year. The principal of the school subsequently filed a report with police.

The woman was summarily indicted and fined 100,000 yen. She reportedly has admitted to the allegations, but said she "didn't know" when asked why she had stolen the toilet paper.

The woman's colleagues had apparently been watching her behavior after toilet paper began running out at an abnormally fast pace around September 2004. (Mainichi)

North Dakota woman bites boyfriend "where it counts" while sleeping

A North Dakota woman has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault and criminal trespass after biting her boyfriend while he slept.

Police say the Dickey County resident broke into her boyfriend's house while he slept on March 22. Then, say police, Amanda Rall climbed into bed and bit the man in his private area.

He called police and was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released.

The 25-year-old Rall was arrested and charged but is currently out on bond.

She is awaiting her first court appearance.

Australian Burglars decide to have a romp in the sack while stealing

DARWIN,Australia, March 29--Burglars who broke into a house in Darwin, Australia, had sex in the victim's master bedroom before fleeing with their loot.The Northern Territory News reported the homeowner returned from vacation to find he had been robbed of cash and alcohol while a housesitter he had employed slept throughout the raid in another bedroom.

"He'd been out drinking and didn't hear what was going on," said the householder, who asked not to be named. "But the evidence of what the thieves got up to before leaving was there for all to see," he told theNews. "The sheets have been taken away for DNA sampling and I have told the police that I don't want them back."

Students to get college credit by attending Final Four

ATLANTA (AP) -- Some students may skip classes this week to attend college basketball's Final Four, though at least a dozen have managed to score class credits out of the trip.

The students are sports management majors at Lynn University in South Florida. As part of a course titled "The Final Four Experience," they will be traveling with a couple of professors to Atlanta to get a firsthand look at what goes into the major sporting event.

And get this, each student gets three credits for the excursion.

"It's a chance for us to meet people with high positions and see how they got to where they are now," junior Emily Lipman said. "Then we'll be able to feed off that."

The group arrived Wednesday and won't just attend the Final Four. They will tour the city's pro and college sports stadiums, network with team executives and some sponsors, including representatives of The Coca-Cola Co.

The trip cost $3,250 per student. It may seem pricey but the total covered the cost of the class, a hotel room for six nights, food, roundtrip airline tickets, two rental minivans, a Georgia Tech baseball game and Thrashers hockey game, along with the Final Four and championship games at the Georgia Dome.

Though it may sound like a sports fan's dream, the students will be required to put in some work. They'll take a couple of exams, keep a diary and will hold a presentation after the trip.

"We said to ourselves, 'What's the best way to teach our students?"' professor Theodore Curtis said. "We knew they needed to see something and experience it, rather than sit during a lecture and listen to us."

Professor Charles Barr, who has escorted Lynn students on overseas study tours, said attending the Final Four was something that couldn't be missed.

"Since it's in our backyard, why not?" he asked. "With the attention the Final Four gets, it provides a perfect opportunity. It gives them a closer look at what they will do in the future."

Sports management majors typically pursue front-office positions with professional or collegiate teams.

"This trip is a stepping stool for us," said senior Joaquin Smits from New York, who has never visited Atlanta. "That's why I don't mind doing any extra work."

Out of 30 applicants for the course, Barr and Curtis picked 12 students they thought showed the most work ethic and dedication in their major.

Lipman was an easy choice. The Atlanta native, who is president of the university's sports management club, wants to work for a major league baseball franchise -- preferably for her hometown Braves.

BUCHAREST (Reuters) - A cashier for Romania's state-owned railway has been asked to pay a month's worth of wages to receive government confirmation that she is alive.

Filoftea Popescu discovered when she applied for a passport that the Romania's People Registration Service had mistakenly declared her dead in November 2005, stripping her of all her rights as a citizen.

"I went to the police ... and I found out that I have no rights in the Romanian state because I died in 2005," the 55-year-old Popescu was quoted on Monday by daily Evenimentul Zilei as saying.

Romania is struggling to cut through vast red tape and complicated legislation to improve a bloated and ineffective administration in order to benefit from new membership in the European Union.

"A lawyer told me it costs me 500 lei (to obtain a court order). Why should I pay to prove I am alive?" Popescu said.

The People Registration Service admitted its error and said it fired the staff responsible.

But Popescu's family doctor is still reeling from the shock of seeing her at his office not long after receiving a copy of her death certificate from the state.

"When she came to my clinic, I lost my voice," said Nicolae Toboiu.

Michigan Sewage missing--15 million gallons worth

SAND LAKE, Mich. (AP) - About 15 million gallons of partially treated sewage water disappeared from a 250,000 square-foot storage lagoon into a sinkhole, but officials don't know where it went after that.

Kent County utility operator Nathan Danenberg, who runs the sewage treatment system for Sand Lake, discovered the leak in the 8-foot-deep lagoon on Friday while taking samples. It wasn't clear when or why the leak occurred.

"I don't know if maybe there are old mines in the area," Danenberg told The Grand Rapids Press for a story published Tuesday.

"It's an odd case. A sinkhole gobbled up all the water and we don't know where it went... It seems to have just gone down into the earth.

"We don't smell anything and we don't see anything."

Mike Bolf, drinking water district engineer for the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, said the state would conduct tests on nearby municipal wells, which are downstream as groundwater flows. But the wells are believed deep enough to be protected by a natural clay or shale wall, he said.

The lagoon, lined with clay, is one of three that house sewage from the village during winter while it is treated with bacteria.

Another day, another husband with his penis cut off

A Chinese woman escaped jail after she cut off her husband's penis and threw it out of the window.

The man drove himself to hospital - but doctors couldn't reattach the organ as it had been eaten by a dog, reports Jinling Evening Post.

Yao Fengfang was given a three year suspended jail sentence after her husband, Li Gengbao, asked the judge to be lenient.

Li, a taxi driver in Nanjing city, said he wanted his wife to keep her liberty so she could look after him for the rest of his life.

Yao suspected her husband, of having an affair with his ex-wife and confronted him after seeing his taxi parked outside of her house.

On the way back home, Yao threatened to 'disable' his husband but he thought she was bluffing. Li went to bed early but he was woken at midnight by a sharp pain.

He said: "My wife was holding a large part of my penis, and I pleaded with her to send me to hospital immediately, but she refused firmly, and when I pleaded with her to give me back the cut penis, she threw it out of the window."

Li wrapped his wound with a pillow cover and drove his taxi to Nanjing City First Hospital.

The hospital carried out emergency surgery and sent staff to look for Li's severed penis, but found it had been eaten by a neighbour's dog.

Peeping Tom must wear fluorescent jacket

A peeping Tom has been banned from going out at night without a fluorescent jacket on.

Stephen Cooper, 24, has been ordered to wear the high-visibility clothing so he can be spotted by potential victims.

The pervert, who has pleaded guilty to voyeurism, received the order after being caught creeping into a woman's garden and staring through a crack in her curtains.

Cooper is awaiting sentence for the offence but in the meantime he has been ordered to don a bright neon coat whenever he ventures out after dark.

Cooper admitted the offence which took place on January 11. He was already on the Sex Offenders Register and the offence was the second time he had breached the conditions imposed on him.

Judge Peter Dedman made the bizarre ban at Southend Crown Court in Essex after adjourning sentencing while psychiatric reports are drawn up.

He said: "I think it is appropriate such an order should be made for the protection of the public in particular women alone, either at home or work or in the street, and also for his own protection to stop him offending.

"He has admitted being in someone's garden peering through the crack in the curtains in the hope of seeing something of a nature which would allow hime to reach sexual gratification."

The Sex Offenders' Prevention Order was drawn up between Cooper, from South Ockendon, Essex, and the Essex Police public protection team. But some have been outraged by the unusual order, saying it will mark him out as a sex offender.

Lesley Bates, a barrister who specialises in sex offence cases, said: "It is very difficult to see how making him wear a fluorescent jacket will prevent further voyeurism.

But, perhaps, more seriously, it appears to have failed to consider the potential consequences which are disproportionate to the benefits.

"It is tantamount to asking him to walk around wearing a sign saying, 'I'm a sex offender'."

This has me a little befuddled. One, because the man was referred to as "the pervert" in this article and that this is not a one-size-fits-all situation. I mean, he has to wear a fluorescent jacket at night because he's a peeping tom? Bates said it correctly that this does nothing other than to make the guy be more creative in how he "peeps"...Plus, what other things are being done for other sex offenders? Rapists have to be escorted everywhere at night? Pedophiles can't be within a mile of anyone under 18, with supervision? Somehow, something here just doesn't feel right...

Seattle area softball team wins game 64-0

Woodinville High School's 64-0 fastpitch softball win over Franklin last week prompted the KingCo 4A coaches to meet Tuesday night to discuss ways to avoid any kind of repeat performance and led to some soul-searching by Woodinville coach Jim Weir.

"Baseball and softball have been part of my life since I was 7 years old," Weir said. "The last thing I want to do is disrespect any opponent, disrespect the game. What happened is unfortunate. I have been questioning myself these last four-five days."

"I have so much respect for this game," he added. "What hurts me the most is maybe I hurt that [respect]. That was not my intention."

Weir said he was "shocked" by the final score after the March 21 game ended. He said he was concentrating more on making sure his players were playing the game right and had lost count of the score.

"If anything positive can come out of this, it's that we can implement some new rules so this never happens again," Weir said.

The meeting, held at Juanita High School, was closed to the public but Tim Crowder, Juanita athletic director in charge of KingCo 4A fastpitch, said one proposal was to change the "mercy rule" — when a game is ended early because of a lopsided score.

A 15-run lead after three full innings would be the new standard, replacing a 10-run lead after five innings. Fastpitch games normally last seven innings, and state rules require a game to go at least five innings for it to be official.

Several other recommendations will be part of the overall plan presented to conference principals and athletic directors, who will make a final decision in the next few weeks. Crowder declined to comment on the other recommendations.

"Everyone's on the same page in terms of trying to do what's best for the kids and still compete," Crowder said.

Eight of 11 coaches attended the meeting and agreed unanimously on the recommendations, he added.

Another suggestion at the meeting involved moving Franklin to a full-time junior-varsity schedule for the rest of the season. The Quakers' struggling program has been beaten 30-0, 24-0 and 13-0 in its three other games.

But Crowder said Washington Interscholastic Activities Association rules prohibit such a move.

Franklin principal Jennifer Wiley said her school's softball team will have to learn how to define success for itself, apart from the scoreboard.

"Our program is about taking kids where they are and growing them from game to game," Wiley said. "We're not measuring success by wins and losses. ... Sometimes that puts us at the top of the heap, and sometimes it does not. There's so much more to athletics than winning, and we need to make sure we're cultivating all those things."

Wiley said there was no indication from her coaches or players at the game that Woodinville was running up the score. Weir said his team stopped being aggressive — hit-and-runs, taking extra bases, tagging up — after going up 7-0.

Weir isn't sure where the line should be drawn.

"At what point is it just too much? Twenty, thirty, forty runs?" he asked in a letter on the team's Web site. "If this game does anything positive, it will point out the inequities in our league, rules that need to be changed and the role umpires can take in such an unbalanced game."

That last synopsis and philosophy was a joke. Does this guy honestly believe that this can teach anyone anything other than the fact that his sportsmanship is basically so far gone that it takes being embarrassed by it to really make a difference?

I understand that there are situations where teams just can't compete, as it seems this team can't, but there's also a line where you trade dignity for out and out giving a psychological wedgie to these individuals. Give me a damn break here...

YouTube stunt catches Reckless Biker

A motorcyclist has been charged with reckless and dangerous driving after his high-speed stunts were posted on the YouTube website.

Officers were stunned after seeing clips of the 34-year-old Edinburgh man driving at speeds averaging 112 mph.

The man is also seen doing wheelies and driving at 170mph in East Lothian at the end of last year.

Police traced the man after detailed study of the clips. A report is being submitted to the procurator fiscal.

Riding a Yamaha R1, he is said to have covered the distance between Longniddry and North Berwick in just seven minutes, at speeds averaging 112 mph in certain sections.

He is also said to have been seen accelerating from rest to high speeds in first gear, performing wheelies and flooring a Honda Fireblade motorbike to its maximum speed of 170 mph along St Germains, the dual carriage running between Prestonpans and Longniddry, on a wet day.

After detailed examination of the YouTube footage, Lothian and Borders Police officers and staff from the force's forensic computer unit were able to trace the man.

Ch Insp Kenny Buchanan of Lothian and Borders Police road policing branch said: "Driving at break-neck speeds along public roads is completely unacceptable and extremely dangerous.

'Serious consequences'

He said: "Allowing footage of it to be posted on a public website is a sure-fire way of getting caught.

"Thanks to the clips on the website, we were able to clearly identify the rider of the bike, and stop him in his tracks.

"We urge this to be a lesson to other drivers who foolishly believe that stunts like these are good entertainment.

"They are not, they are dangerous and could result in very serious consequences, certainly for yourself, if not some other innocent member of the public."

It is thought that this is one of the highest speeds ever recorded by Lothian and Borders Police.

Police are investigating another complaint about a car being driven at more than 100mph in East Lothian, footage of which was also posted on the YouTube website.

Tampa misspells Kennedy sign; Teddy's so drunk he thinks it's spelled right

Sorry, President Kennedy. Tampa misspelled your name.

The city put up a new street sign last night at the corner of Kennedy Boulevard and Ashley Drive. The glitch, though, was that the city spelled Kennedy “Kenndey.”

Call it human error, said Irv Lee, the city’s public works director.

“Sometimes when you’re baking cakes, you break a few eggs,” Lee said.

Irv said the error is especially unfortunate because it is at such a high-profile intersection. The city will put up a corrected sign tonight.

“We don’t want to dishonor the name of President Kennedy,” Lee said.

Not real sure why the quote from Lee was used as it was. Would he say that about some manholes that turned up missing when they installed them? "Senior" officer not just a moniker; Oldest CEO turns 106

Jack A. Weil, the founder and chief executive of Denver-based Rockmount Ranch Wear, is believed to be the nation's oldest CEO.

He turns 106 today.

Credited with introducing snap buttons on Western shirts, Weil's slim-fitting shirts have been worn by luminaries including Ronald Reagan, Elvis Presley and Eric Clapton.

"We hit on something that interested people," said Weil, speaking from the company's retail outlet and offices at 1626 Wazee St. in downtown Denver. "It was the attraction of the Rocky Mountains."

Weil's grandson Steve heads daily operations of the manufacturing company, which sells internationally.

Weil has learned a thing or two about life and business during his more than 10 decades. Here are some nuggets of wisdom from "Papa Jack."

On making a good Western shirt: "A crummy shirt fits like a sack. The other is a form-fitting shirt, which is what I figured to make."

On building a successful business: "You've got to consider the environment, and you've got to consider the times. I learned a long time ago that I don't want anyone to give me more than 5 percent of my business. Because if I lose them, that would put too much pressure on (the company)."

On dealing with overdue customers: "I suggest that they send me three or four checks post-dated. Not too many (business) people do that. You have to understand your customers' problems."

Dog performs Heimlich on owner--still has to sleep on the floor

CALVERT, Md. - Toby, a 2-year-old golden retriever, saw his owner choking on a piece of fruit and began jumping up and down on the woman's chest. The dog's owner believes the dog was trying to perform the Heimlich maneuver and saved her life.

Debbie Parkhurst, 45, of Calvert told the Cecil Whig she was eating an apple at her home Friday when a piece lodged in her throat. She attempted to perform the Heimlich maneuver on herself but it didn't work. After she began beating on her chest, she said Toby noticed and got involved.

"The next think I know, Toby's up on his hind feet and he's got his front paws on my shoulders," she recalled. "He pushed me to the ground, and once I was on my back, he began jumping up and down on my chest."

That's when the apple dislodged and Toby started licking her face to keep her from passing out, she said.

"I literally have pawprint-shaped bruises on my chest. I'm still a little hoarse, but otherwise, I'm OK," Parkhurst said.

"The doctor said I probably wouldnt be here without Toby," said Parkhurst, a jewelry artist. "I keep looking at him and saying 'Youre amazing.'"

JERUSALEM - In bad news for its religious Jewish supporters, an Israeli pro-marijuana party announced Tuesday that pot is forbidden on Passover.

Cannabis is among the substances Jews are forbidden to consume during the week-long festival, which begins Monday, said Michelle Levine, a spokeswoman for the Green Leaf party.

Biblical laws prohibit eating leavened foods during Passover, replacing bread with flat crackers called matza. Later injunctions by European rabbis extended those rules to forbid other foods like beans and corn, and more recent rulings have further expanded the ban to include hemp seeds, which today are found in some health oils - and in marijuana.

Green Leaf is a small political party that supports the legalization of marijuana. Although it is by no means a Jewish religious authority, the group decided to warn its observant supporters away from the drug on Passover.

"You shouldn't smoke marijuana on the holiday, and if you have it in your house you should get rid of it," Levine said. The edict was first reported in The Jerusalem Post.

But not everyone needs to give up their habit for the duration of the festival. The rabbinic injunctions banning hemp were never adopted by Sephardic Jews, who come from countries in the Middle East and North Africa. That means there is no reason they can't keep smoking marijuana, Levine said, except that it remains illegal, despite her party's best efforts.

Green Leaf contested the last three national elections but never won a seat, despite gaining popularity as a protest vote. According to Levine, the party has a large number of religious supporters.

Authorities seized a flock of sheep that had wandered away from a downtown home to graze on floral arrangements in the town cemetery.Animal neglect charges were pending Tuesday against the animals' owner, David Watts, who kept about 80 of the animals in his crumbling house in this Raleigh suburb, police said."He lives upstairs and the sheep were living downstairs," police Sgt. Robert Towell said. "He considered them pets."

Watts even walked some of the sheep around the neighborhood on a leash.

About 30 sheep were euthanized because of ailing health, said Michael Williams, director of the Wake County Animal Care, Control and Adoption Center. A male dog in Chengdu, Sichuan, had to receive an intravenous drip in hospital after being given Viagra and made to mate with three female dogs on a single day.

Wang, the dog's owner, has been very busy since mating season arrived. Her dog is considered handsome, and many owners of female dogs want her dog to sire puppies with their pets. Wang can earn more than 1,000 yuan ($128) per breeding session, so in order to boost her earnings she fed her dog Viagra and made it mate with three female dogs last Sunday. The effort was apparently strenuous enough that the dog had to be taken to hospital.

Woman drops 40 cigarette a day habit, now addicted to inhalers

A SMOKER beat a 40-a-day habit — only to get hooked on plastic substitute ciggies instead.

Linda Nutt, 58, conquered her 40-year habit by using nicotine replacement inhalers.

The Nicorette Inhalators contain a cartridge impregnated with a tiny dose of nicotine.

The gadgets are designed to give smokers the sensation of having a puff while holding something cigarette-shaped in their fingers.

But three years on, mum Linda is now addicted to chewing the Inhalators’ plastic cases and gets through at least one a day.

Nicorette manufacturer Pfizer has sent her hundreds free in an attempt to help her. But now the firm has refused to give her any more, saying she must beat the addiction once and for all.

And Linda’s GP cannot prescribe any more Inhalators, which cost £6 for six, on the NHS.

Now retired Linda, of Sheldon, Birmingham, is scared she will start smoking again.

She said: “I don’t understand why Pfizer had a change of heart. It’s the plastic I’m addicted to, not the cartridge.”

Man Caught with 93 pounds of underwear-and it wasn't Nicole Richie!

PULLMAN, Wash. - A man was charged with theft and burglary after police said they found 93 pounds of women’s panties, brassieres and other underwear at his home.

Investigators believe Garth M. Flaherty, 24, took as many as 1,500 undergarments from apartment complex laundry rooms before he was caught, police Cmdr. Chris Tennant said.

A man was seen taking underwear from two laundry rooms Saturday, a witness recorded his license number, and Flaherty was identified from photographs, Tennant said.

Police found enough underwear in his bedroom to fill five garbage bags, Tennant said.

“He said he had a problem,” Tennant said.

Flaherty has been jailed on 12 counts of second-degree burglary and one of first-degree theft.

Police had previously received 12 reports of underwear thefts in the northeast part of town, where Washington State University is located.

“We were kind of concerned about how to match up bras and panties with victims,” Tennant said. “Based on the unique descriptions from a couple of women, we can tie him to those thefts.”

Strippers must pay taxes on lap dances

LONDON (Reuters) - Lap-dancers at one of Britain's biggest strip clubs must pay their own value added tax (VAT) bills, a senior judge ruled on Friday.

In a High Court ruling that could affect dancers at other venues, Mr Justice Mann said it was the women and not their club, Spearmint Rhino, who should foot the bill.

He backed the chain's argument that the self-employed dancers provide the entertainment on offer, rather than the club.

"The women are not employed by the club. They are all self-employed," Mann said. "They pay a sum to the club which allows them to ply their trade for a session of eight hours."

Mann said an earlier decision by the VAT and Duties Tribunal that Spearmint Rhino should pay the bill was wrong.

Describing the services provided, the judge said: "A member of the public pays 8 pounds ($15.73) for admission and on entering goes into an area in which he, or she, may drink, socialize, eat and watch partially clad women dancing on a podium.

"At any one time, depending on the day, time of day and availability, there are between 20 and 140 young women available to provide the entertainment services in issue.

"Some of them will be those dancing on the podium. These proceedings do not, at least directly, concern that activity.

"The activities which concern me are those provided as a result of more direct engagement between the women and the customer.

"For a sum of money, the women can be engaged to perform private dances for the customer. A fee of 10 pounds is charged for a semi-nude dance; 20 pounds is charged for a nude dance. Each dance lasts for a 'track', about three minutes.

"In addition to those services, the dancer and the customer can agree what is called a 'sit-down'.

"For 250 pounds, a sum which is in fact negotiable, a woman can be engaged to sit and socialize with the customer for an hour."

Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs had argued that the entertainment services were supplied by the club to the customer, through the dancers they had engaged.

Diaper wearing teens get video game tournament shut down: That stinks!

Fort Collins C.O.(FP)-Saturday a large underground video game tournament featuring the popular Xbox 360 game Gears of War came to a surprising end.

Among the sixty plus competitors was a very determined team of young adults and one teenager who were equipped with disposable adult diapers. Security for the rented warehouse was forced to remove one of the players after others complained of the “septic tank like smell” coming from a nearby 16 year old gamer.

The team had the intention of only using the diapers for “an emergency trip” but after the 16 year old had consumed five cans of a caffeine loaded drink called a Spike Shooter he claimed he just couldn’t hold “it”. And “it” being the worst kind of it. Being the dedicated gamer he was he just tried to ignore his accident.

Nearby competitors felt it hard to overlook his slip up and asked him to be removed. After being removed from the tournament her proceeded to call local law enforcement and complain about his ejection not realizing he had attended an illegal paid gathering.

Upon arrival officers dispersed the tournament and issued fines. No arrests were made.

Does Size Matter? Longest address on web says YES

A website devoted to part of a Welsh village features in a list of the longest internet addresses in Europe.

A Birmingham man registered the 63-character address named after Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch in Anglesey.

The address - www.llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogochuchaf.eu - actually refers to the upper part of the Welsh-speaking village.

It is the maximum number of characters allowed and is recognised as the longest valid internet name in the world.

Keith Wood registered the domain name with EURid, the group managing the new European .eu domain.

He also registered an alternative to its full name - www.llanfair.wales.com - to spare internet users the hassle of using the village's full title.

Eryl Roberts, who maintains the village website, said: "We registered the village as a domain name to prove a point that home pages don't have to be short and they don't have to be made up names either."

Six other people last year registered the longest possible internet addresses possible.

MySpace now featuring bank robbers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man suspected of robbing several Arkansas banks has been featured in a video for about a month on the popular social networking Web site MySpace.

Now Arkansas police could add his mug shot to the Web page.

Ernest Gail Lail, 67, appeared in a Van Buren, Ark., court Thursday, on a charge of aggravated robbery. Police said they believe Lail, who has given his address as Concord, N.C., committed six bank robberies in Arkansas cities.

The robberies got national attention after a police sergeant in Fort Smith, Ark., put photos and video from a January robbery on MySpace in early March. He titled the page "Do You Know Me???"

Over 1,800 people signed up to be "friends" of the robber.

Fort Smith police Sgt. Jarrad Copeland said the robberies got local media coverage, but police weren't getting tips. That made Copeland think the robber was from elsewhere.

"I was just trying to think of a way to get the pictures to a broader audience," he said.

The Web page seems to pay homage to the bank-robbing lifestyle. Video shows the robber sweeping stacks of bills into a bag. He looks posed in some still pictures. The page has $100 bills as wallpaper. The background music is the "Bad Boys" theme from the TV show "Cops."

The MySpace member page says the robber wants to meet "more bank tellers so that I can continue my crime spree!!!"

Copeland said Lail had been serving a federal prison term for a bank robbery in the 1960s and was released on parole in September. He listed Concord as his address with parole officials.

The MySpace page apparently did not directly help officers find Lail. He was arrested after he wrecked his car Wednesday, fleeing from a bank robbery in Van Buren, said Lt. Brent Grill of Van Buren's investigation division.

"It would have been kind of a cool deal if someone recognized him from MySpace," Copeland said. He said the page still may have helped, in that so many people were on alert.

"So glad to hear that you caught him," a "friend" named Stacy posted Thursday. "I have to admit though I think we will all miss the page. Maybe all law enforcement should use MySpace to help catch these losers."

102-year old man gets 25 year mortgage; And we wonder why there is a record number of foreclosures?

A man of 102 has been given a 25-year mortgage for £200,000. If he survived to pay off the debt at age 127, he would be the oldest person who has ever lived.

The pensioner, from East Sussex, has agreed to make repayments of £958 a month, on an interest-only basis.

He will use rent from the property to pay them and is understood to be hoping to profit from rises in the property's value.

It is thought the pensioner sees the buy-to-let market as a way to easy money, despite growing warnings that high property prices make it difficult to profit from renting out homes.

Most banks and building societies have an age limit of 75. But a number of lenders, including the Mortgage Trust, Bristol and West, Woolwich, and Preferred, impose no age restriction.

He secured his loan through Mortgages for Business, a Kent firm that has helped hundreds of elderly people buy homes.

The firm's spokesman Jonathan Moore said yesterday: "Even five years ago, anybody over 65 would have been hard-pushed to get any kind of mortgage.

"But some lenders have eased their restrictions to keep in step with the market.

"This 102-year-old has taken this interest-only, buy-to-let mortgage out as an investment in partnership with his family and his repayments are being covered by his tenant.

"It's not risk-free if property prices and rental income suddenly fall. But look at the South-East - there's a great property market.

"Rental is absolutely booming because the South-East hasn't got enough houses. Many over-65s take out mortgages to invest invest in buy-to-let because the pensions crisis has left them with insufficient income."

Mortgage lenders have become increasingly willing to extend large loans to anyone willing to sign on the dotted line, whatever their prospect of paying off the loan.

There are said to be thousands of pensioners saddling themselves with large debts that they are unlikely to live to pay off.

The world's oldest person, Jeanne Calment, died in France in 1997 at 122.

As it happens, she pulled off a property coup of her own.

In 1965, when she was 90 years old, she agreed to give her flat to a young solicitor when she died, if he paid her a pension of £330 a month.

He died two years before her - after paying out three times the value of her home.

Koreans to block porn sites on web; (Good luck with that)

The government plans to block foreign pornographic Internet sites to protect teenagers from obscene video files.

The Ministry of Information and Communication called on the country's major fixed-line operators Friday to check the technical viability of the scheme.

``We are set to deny access to porn sites based overseas, with details being unveiled early next week,'' said Suh Byung-jo, director general at the ministry.

``We feel obliged to come up with measures to counter the recent woes caused by adult video clips available on the internet,'' said Suh, who chaired the meeting.?

Suh's remarks came in the wake of a set of mishaps early this week involving major portal sites such as Yahoo Korea, Daum Communication and Naver.

On March 18, two porn videos were posted on Yahoo Korea, the nation's second-string Web portal. More than 20,000 users downloaded the files.

Unaware of this, Yahoo Korea left the clips on their site for roughly six hours and a number of minors are believed to have downloaded them.

Daum, the second-largest portal site, also carried an audio-visual file of foreign fashion models exposing their breasts for approximately seven hours last Tuesday.

On the same day, a Web surfer posted a nude photo of a woman at the top portal Naver but the company did not remove the picture for about four hours.

``It may cost some investment for the Internet service providers to block overseas porn sites and the overall Internet connection speed may slightly slow down due to such steps,'' Suh said.

``Plus, it will be a tall task to block every porn site. But we think we have to be able to cut access to a nasty site when our people report it,'' Suh said.

However, some are concerned that porn sites will find a way to sidestep the access bans.

Man Angry at Ex-Girlfriend Kills, BBQs her

(AP) HOUSTON Investigators say Timothy Wayne Shepherd, 27, confessed Wednesday to strangling Tynesha Stewart because he was angry she had begun a new relationship. Shepherd, who is charged with murder, isbeing held on $250,000 bond.

"We have determined through this investigation that the defendant dismembered Tynesha Stewart and . . . he burned the body parts," HarrisCounty Sheriff Tommy Thomas said. "There are no remaining body parts."

The announcement Saturday ended a debate in the Houston area about whether law-enforcement officials should launch a massive and expensive search of the area's overflowing landfills in hopes of finding Stewart's remains.

Officials first thought that the body had been disposed in a large commercial trash bin that had since been emptied.

Sheriff'sinvestigators had decided against launching a costly and time-consuming search for Stewart's remains, angering her family and friends. Complaints from activists and lawmakers prompted Thomas to get emergency approval to spend up to $500,000 for a search.

Thomas said he knew, but could not disclose, that there were no body parts to find. He said investigators were unable to release that information to the public or to Stewart's family because of the investigation. Stewart's family has since been advised, and understands why there will be no search, Thomas said.

Stewart, a college freshman from Houston, was last seen with Shepherd on March 15 while she was home forspring break visiting her mother. Friends have said Stewart and Shepherd quit dating at the beginning of this school year.

Shepherd'sattorney, Chip Lewis, has not returned calls for comment. Thomas said Stewart's family has asked for privacy and will not respond to callsfrom the media.

Authorities did not give any more details about how they believe the slaying occurred, but said nothing remains of Stewart. Although human remains generally require extremely high temperatures to destroy, he would not discuss how he believed the bodycould be burned to nothing.

Supposed pedophile beaten, stabbed, humiliated, drowned--Oopsie, they got the wrong guy

A man with learning disabilities was humiliated, tortured, and then thrown into a river to drown by four neighbours who suspected that he was a paedophile, a murder trial has heard.

The two men and two women, who are sisters, lured "trusting and vulnerable" Sean Miles, 37, to a house where he was beaten and stuck with knives. He was then taken to a different address where he was made to strip and hit with a golf club.

Finally Mr Miles, who has in IQ of just 50, was taken to the Thames in Oxford where he was thrown into the river. He could not swim and his injuries were so severe that he had no chance of saving himself, Oxford Crown Court was told.

Each time he surfaced he was pushed back under with a stick. His body was discovered by a lock keeper 10 days later in May last year.

Edward Doyle, 34; Terry McMasters, 24; Tracey Fathers, 36, and her sister Karen, who all live on the same road in Oxford, deny his murder.

Adrian Redgrave, prosecuting, told the jury it would hear how, when arrested, the defendants would point the finger away from themselves. "Each blames the other and each tells very different stories," he said.

The court heard that Mr Miles, who lived in sheltered housing, was unable to look after himself properly and required regular care.

Karen Fathers, who was trusted as a friend by Mr Miles, had persuaded him to follow her to McMasters's house because one of the four co-accused had come to the conclusion that Mr Miles had interfered with the four-year-old son of one of the women. Mr Redgrave said: "Over the course of the following hours Sean Miles was subjected to insults, indignity and violence that was intensely psychologically humiliating."

Mr Redgrave read from statements which gave contradictory accounts of what had happened and who was responsible.

Tracey Fathers was said to have confided in a fellow prisoner at Bromfield Prison, Middlesex. Mr Redgrave said: "She told a prisoner that the murder she was charged with was pre-planned, that they were going to kill Sean."

Mr Redgrave added: "The case is that they were all criminally involved in the killing of Sean Miles."

Robert Fox, the managing director of the accommodation where Mr Miles lived, described him as "a sweet man, who never did anything to harm anyone.

"Sean was very trusting of everyone and as soon as you talked to him, he believed he had found a friend."

The court heard that Mr Miles had allegedly been bullied by Doyle in the past.

ALGOOD, Tenn. -- Two Franklin County girls are facing charges of allegedly making a prank call that led to a woman suffering a stroke.

Both 13-year old girls live in Winchester.

The girls are accused of leaving a frightening message on the cell phone owned by Algood, Tenn., resident Beverly Dickson."Hello, Beverly. I want to play a game. Man sends sexual tapes to jailed loved one--his monkey

A Plano resident allegedly sent his male monkey a sexually explicit audio tape while the animal was in custody at the Living Materials Center (LMC), according to LMC staff.

Darwin, a Rhesus Macaque Monkey, was confiscated by animal services on Feb. 21 after police found illegal animals in owner Bobby Denton Crawford Jr.’s home.

Darwin was released back to Crawford Friday afternoon after being transported from the LMC, where the monkey stayed the past month.

Sherry Smith, a spokesperson for Plano Animal Services, said Darwin was given back to Crawford because he agreed to move out of the city.

“Where he is going to be moving, they don’t prohibit them there,” Smith said. “He is complying with city ordinances by removing Darwin from the city.”

Smith declined to comment on where Crawford had moved to. Crawford made at least three visits to the LMC and a handful of tear-filled phone calls requesting Darwin be returned to his custody, according to Jim Dunlap, curator at the LMC.

On one such visit, Dunlap said Crawford handed him a box of Darwin’s toys. Among those toys was an audio tape player with a recorded message from Crawford addressed to Darwin that was of a sexual nature, Dunlap said.

After listening to the tape, Dunlap said Crawford made references to Darwin and himself engaging in mutual stimulation.

Four animal services officers spent more than an hour Friday trying to coax Darwin into an animal carrier before finally tranquilizing the monkey.

“(Darwin) is very dangerous,” said Amy Early, one of the Plano Animal Services Officers who transported Darwin. “(Rhesus Macaque Monkeys) will go straight for your face and tear into you. They have the strength of six men and inch-and-a-half incisors.”

Crawford showed Dunlap the scars Darwin gave him when he first started making unannounced visits to the LMC two days after the monkey was confiscated, Dunlap said.

LMC staff were instructed to call the police when Crawford made his subsequent visits, Dunlap said.

The decision to return Darwin was not due to public pressure generated by media attention, Smith said.

Dunlap said he received hate mail, threatening e-mails and angry telephone calls from people who said Crawford should be allowed to keep the monkey.

The hazards of keeping a wild animal as a pet are two-fold, according to Dunlap.

“If you buy a wild animal, you are creating two problems,” Dunlap said. “One, it is a wild animal and two, you are making them unafraid of people.”
